Alive 2007 review

The power of Daft Punk's most successful works

There should be no doubt that after the ten years of performing outside native Paris Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter have been warmly welcomed at their jubilant live concert at Palais Omnisports in June 2007. It was one of those impressive shows when afterwards the viewers only remember two strangely dressed guys who made go crazy a many thousand crowd. The dance music of Daft Punk has been always standing out against the numerous albums of the genre, and the best way to make sure of it is only being present at one of its concerts which are never dull or monotonous. The recording of the performance in the native city this June is the best confirmation to it. Of course Alive 2007 lacks the visual impression that is so necessary when dealing with the unique electronic duo, but even the audio recording is so rich in the band's favorite hooks and new surprises that it is substantial enough to appreciate the power of Daft Punk's most successful works that are presented here.

The recording of historic concert Alive 2007

The tracks on the album Alive 2007 directly correspond to the way they have been performed at the concert, gradually flowing one into another. The record opens with Daft Punk's classic songs Robot Rock/Oh Yeah the first being based on one guitar chord and the second presenting something vibrating, both sound as fresh as many years ago. The inclusion of such loud tunes as Touch It/Technologic is pleasing, and one of the most impressive is combination Television Rules The Nation/Crescendolls although quite a short one, it can even shock someone with its acuteness. Track called Too Long/Steam Machine is one of the longest here and offers a changed version of the last album's song, that used to be a bit restrained and has now gained absolutely unruly energy. Another piece of old hits Around The World/Harder Better Faster Stronger is the shortest track here, preparing the listener for a continuous wild ride on Burnin'/Too Long where the bass line prevails over the robot like audio effects. Compositions Face To Face/Short Circuit have become the most danceable moments of the concert, and famous One More Time/Aerodynamic passing to Aerodynamic Beats/Forget About The World add some strange technological noises to the flow which is already all electronic. Finally after the insistent beat and broken texts of Da Funk/Daftendirekt there comes climax in the form of Superheroes/Human After All/Rock 'N' Roll, where the recording of historic concert finds its logical ending.

French electronic monsters

Original in everything it does Daft Punk has refused to release a video disc with the recording of its show sticking only to Alive 2007. As Thomas Bangalter has stated the amateur video recordings which can be found on the internet on well-known sites are much more eloquent than any licensed video version of the concert. Yet even record Alive 2007 is quite enough to feel the atmosphere that these French electronic monsters create around them. The crowd's shouting and the live sound give unforgettable emotions providing the presence effect. This concert offers everything that the audience likes so much about Daft Punk's dance music, and also unexpected DJ's hooks, new songs versions with the noises of unexplainable origin applied and many other things. Listening to Alive 2007 one unwillingly realizes why this duo has become an example for a huge number of newly formed bands, and made the genre of electronic music extremely popular. Responding to the hot welcome at their home the guys have put out strength as much as they could charging a huge amount of people with an unconceivable portion of energy the greatest part of which is definitely present on the record as well.

As a longtime concertgoer for all types of music, I can attest to the sometimes painful experience of seeing electronic artists live. I remember practically falling asleep while seeing The Orb in Charlotte, NC, where the sum total of their stage set-up was two oversized white balls against which random lights were projected. Two years later, I watched The Chemical Brothers at what must have been one of the last 'raves' in existence, and even six years or so into their career even they could do little more than play records from behind a phalanx of equipment. And in 2001, when Daft Punk released their concert album Alive 1997

, I became more or less convinced that no one could overcome the static, uninspiring limitations electronic music placed upon live performance. Punk

2007 Of course there have been exceptions to this over my concertgoing career, but it wasn't until 2006 that I started to believe that electronic or dance artists could inspire and excite in the same way as their rock and hip-hop-oriented counterparts. Daft Punk's performance at Coachella (read more about it by clicking here) was a watershed moment both in the festival's history and my own, because it rekindled my interest in going to see folks like the French duo live. Subsequently, they have released a second live album, Alive 2007, which evokes the spirit and creativity of that show and qualifies as one of the great live recordings of all time. Daft
The first advantage Alive 2007 has over its predecessor is its division into 12 chapters, if you will; the first concert disc was one continuous 45 minute mix, which meant that you were essentially helpless to listen to the whole thing from the beginning each time. That said, most of these tracks feature at least two songs, although Daft Punk's integration and mixing of multiple songs is sufficiently dexterous that you will scarcely know where one ends and the next begins. When the pair combine excerpts of Busta Rhymes' Daft-sampling 'Touch It' with 'Technologic,' for example, it's tough to know which is more compelling - their own robotic breakbeats or Swizz Beatz' shuffling reinterpretation of them.
But listening to these chopped-up, remixed elements of some of their biggest songs, it's tough not to appreciate why their music remains so indelible: their compositions are by and large constructed from series of insanely catchy, simple sounds into irresistible, anthemic symphonies. This style has since been capitalized upon by the likes of Justice, Mr. Oizo and others, which as far as I'm concerned only broadens the landscape; but when your next thought is that someone should bring the Goblin-inspired melodies of Justice's 'Phantom Pt II' somewhere into a mix of 'Technologic' and 'Television Rules the Nation,' it's a sign that Daft Punk's iconic power is as much about interchangeable riffs as overall tracks.

Ultimately, that's also precisely why this record works: even if you can't remember a song like 'Crescendolls' by name, you immediately identify its disco-driven exuberance. Much like their Coachella appearance, Daft Punk isn't interested in crafting a greatest-hits medley for consumption by the steeped and superficial fan alike; rather, they're there to party, and want to get the crowd going at all costs - and one expects especially if they can do something fresh or original with their biggest and presumably most tiresome hits.
Speaking of which, 'One More Time,' 'Around the World' and 'Da Funk' all make a requisite appearance, but like the rest of the discography from which they are drawing, these are mere raw materials for the disc's overall tapestry of ass-shaking rhythms. Additionally, less obvious classics like 'Too Long' and 'Steam Machine' are manipulated far more interestingly, twisting the original songs' straightforward beats into tempo-changing symphonies that, with any luck, will serve as the next round of samples for future hip-hop stars. Overall, Alive 2007 is as invigorating a listen as if you were actually there, and serves as ample evidence that electronic artists and live shows are two great tastes which can still taste great together.
