Q: What is a SIM/Hasp?

A: When you install Mastercam on your computer, you are installing every component of the system. For example, you have multi-axis, wire, router, art, lathe, surfacing toolpaths, etc. Although you see all of those options, you are only able to use a certain number of toolpaths. This is because your company has only purchased the ability to run some of those functions. The SIM (also known as a HASP or Dongle) is responsible for this. The SIM tells Mastercam exactly what functions you are licensed to run and what functions you cannot run. If you remove the SIM from the computer, you will no longer have the ability to run the software at all.

Q: What is a NetHasp?

A: A NetHasp is the same thing as a SIM/Hasp, however it broadcasts the Mastercam license over network server. Instead of having a SIM plugged into individual computers, you can manage the licenses over your network.

Q: How do I update my Hasp?

A: If your company is up to date on your maintenance contract, you can update your hasp for another year of maintenance. This will allow you to download and install the latest version of Mastercam.

The first thing you will need to update your hasp is a code file; these should be sent from your local reseller. Each hasp needs to be updated individually, so there will be a code file for each hasp. To correctly update the hasp, download the code file to your computer, make sure the number on the hasp matches up with the number on the code file (for example, for the code file below, the sim would have a number of 123456). Simply double click the code file and you will see a message that says “Hasp updated successfully”.

Q: Why did I receive an error message that says “No SIM found”?

A: You’ve just installed Mastercam on your new computer. Upon trying to open Mastercam, you get an error – “No SIM found”, which prohibits you from running the software. This may be due to a number of reasons. Most commonly, Mastercam is looking for a normal hasp when it should be looking for a NetHasp (or vice versa). We can tell Mastercam exactly what type of Hasp we are using by using Nhaspx.exe. This file is most easily accessed from the start menu. Select the start menu >> all programs >> MastercamX8 (or whatever version you’re running) >> utilities >> nhaspx (see below). If you are using a NetHasp, at the top of the NhaspX page, set it to “NetHasp” and “Network”. If you are using a normal hasp, set it to “Local” and “Hasp”.

Q: Why did I receive an error message that says “Cannot find Parasolid data”?

A: This error is found when trying to import a Solidworks file into Mastercam. To fix this error, we need to open a command prompt – to do this, go to the start menu >> all programs >> accessories. Right click on command prompt and select “run as administrator”. Once the command prompt is open, type “cd” and hit enter. Then, type “cd c:program files” hit enter, and finally, type “regsvr32.exe mcamx8commonsworksdataswdocumentmgr.dll” and hit enter, you can double check your command prompt with the one below to check your work. After you hit enter you should get the notification below.

Q: How do I switch machines?

A:Let’s say you have just written 20+ operations, however after you post it out, you realize you used the wrong machine. Or you’ve loaded up an old Mastercam file and want to post it out on your new machine. How can we switch what machine we are using?

1. First, hit the plus sign next to “Properties” in the operation manager (see below):

2. Upon clicking the plus sign, you should expose 3 options, files, tool settings, and stock set-up. Go ahead and click on “files”.

3. Once in the files page, click on “replace” and scroll through the machine list to find the correct machine you would like to use.

4. Once you have selected your new machine, hit the green check at the bottom right of your files page.

Q: Why aren’t all of my operations posting?

A:Let’s say you try to post out all of your 10 operations, however, only 2 of them post out. This is because Mastercam posts out operations that have the same NC file name (the text box that pops up when you go to write a toolpath, see below). So, if you wish to post out all of your operations, we need to make sure they have the same NC file name. To do this, select all of the toolpaths. Then, right click in the operations manager – select “edit selected operations” >> change NC file name. This will now set that NC file name for all of your operations, so they should post out successfully.

Q: How do I change colors?

A: To change the color of wireframe, solids or surfaces, we are going to focus on the following three iconsColor Icons which are displayed at the bottom of our screen. They represent the colors of wireframe, solids and surfaces respectively. To change the color wireframe, we would click on the wireframe icon and switch our color. Every wireframe entity we draw from here on out will be in that new color.

But what if we wanted to change the color of the wireframe we have already drawn? To do this, we are going to right click on the wireframe icon. A prompt should pop up saying “select the entities to change the level of.” Go ahead and click the wireframe you want to change the color of and hit enter on your keyboard (if you want to select all of your wireframe, use the “all” icon at the top of the screen, and put a check in the box for “wireframe”). Once you hit enter, it should bring you to your color palate page where you can now select a new color for your wireframe.

Q: How do I create a Zip2Go file?

Mastercam X8 No Sim Found

A:Zip2Go files are helpful for your resellers when it comes to tech support because a Zip2Go file (.Z2G) contains all of the pertinent information regarding the file you’re working on. It sends us your machine definitions, control definition, post processor, toolpaths and more.

To create a Zip2Go – first save your file, then click on “help” at the top of the screen and then select “Zip2Go utility”. Once in the Zip2Go page, under file options, put a check in the boxes for config files, post processors, and toolpath files, then click “create Zip2Go”. This Z2G file will have the same name as your file, and will have the extension .Z2G. This file will be found in “My documents” unless you configured it otherwise.
